Wings begins with something ordinary.
A mother prepares lunch while waiting for her son and his girlfriend to arrive.
Then the phone rings.
Over the course of a conversation with her son, the everyday domestic environment gradually becomes the setting for something far darker — forcing the film to confront family loyalty, responsibility and the instinct to protect someone when protection itself begins to acquire a disturbing meaning.
Directed by Fivos Imellos, written by Imellos and Nancy Spetsioti and produced by Ace House Productions, Wings was created with the support of the Greek Film Centre. Official Greek Film Centre material lists the film at 17 minutes, with Ace House Productions as production company and Konstantinos Gourgiotis as producer.
But the defining production decision was more demanding:
the central story unfolds through a sixteen-minute uninterrupted take.
No cuts to reshape the performance.
No coverage to rescue a moment in the edit.
No second camera angle to hide a mistake.
Director Fivos Imellos has described the extensive rehearsal and production coordination required to achieve the shot, while contemporary coverage of the film specifically highlighted its technically demanding unbroken cinematography. Flix
Every department — performance, camera movement, focus, Steadicam, lighting, production design, sound and timing — had to function as one continuous choreography.
The film premiered at the Drama International Short Film Festival in 2023 and subsequently travelled internationally. Its festival run included Athens, Tirana, Corto Dorico in Italy, interfilm Berlin and Greek film festivals abroad. It received awards including the Adriatic Award at Corto Dorico, Best Short Film at Lo Spiraglio, the Audience Award and Best Actress at Micro μ, and an Audience Award at the International Alexandria Short Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Hellenic Film Academy's Iris Award for Best Fiction Short Film.
The Hellenic Film Commission currently records 15 awards for Wings.
