A story about education — told through the children whose futures depend on it.
Several years after Science Bridges, our collaboration with SciCo took us considerably further from home.
To Gongo, a rural village in Tanzania.
SciCo's educational work in the region is built around a train-the-trainer model: instead of creating a temporary intervention, local teachers are trained to deliver hands-on STEAM education themselves. Across the wider programme, SciCo reports that teachers from Gongo and neighbouring villages have been trained to bring these methods to thousands of students.
But Gongo was never conceived simply as a film about an NGO programme.
Ace House Productions approached it as
a feature-length observational documentary.
We arrived without a predetermined script and allowed the story to reveal itself through the people we met.
At its centre are Abu and Janet, two young students growing up in a place where ambition can extend far beyond the opportunities immediately available to them. Both dream of becoming doctors. Through their lives, the film moves from classrooms and educational workshops into something much larger: childhood, family, distance, opportunity and the enormous difference that access to education can make to a person's future.
The production required us to work differently from the controlled environments of commercial filmmaking. Moments could not be recreated. Characters could not be directed. The camera had to observe rather than impose.
That became the visual language of the film.
The result is a documentary in which the educational programme provides the context, while the people of Gongo provide the story.
At its core, Gongo asks a very simple question:
How different can a child's future become when education makes another future imaginable.
